Shalhevet defeated DRS High School of Woodmere, N.Y., 57-50 yesterday in their first game of Yeshiva University’s Red Sarachek Basketball Tournament. They now advance to the Tier 1 Quarterfinal and will play TABC this morning at 7:30 a.m. PST.
Played in a full Max Stern Athletic Center at YU, the game was attended by at least 30 Shalhevet students, along with about that many parents, teachers and alumni. Senior classes have been cancelled during the tournament, making it easier for them to fly to New York and attend.
Shalhevet Varsity Basketball Coach Ryan Coleman wasn’t expecting this to be the best game because the team’s last game was about seven weeks ago.

“I was expecting for us to be rusty,” Coach Coleman said in a post-game interview with The Boiling Point. “[We were] a bit more rusty on the offensive end and we really struggled on defense so that was a little bit disappointing, but I think we did a good job in the second half.”
This game was the Tier 1 Qualifier round, and though Shalhevet was up in the first quarter, they were down in both the second (31-25) and third (43-40). However, they pulled ahead to win 57-50, allowing them to advance to the Tier 1 quarterfinals.

Coach Coleman said that going forward tomorrow and for the rest of the tournament, the team can’t rely on three-point shooting.
“I thought we did that too much today,” he said. “I think we have a massive advantage in this tournament. Sam Jacobson is a great inside player and we need to play through him a little bit more than we did today.”
