JoJo’s Blog: Senior Staff Game

This Wednesday, December 7, was the first senior staff game in recent memory, if not in the history of the school. The much-anticipated event that helped raise money for the senior Poland-Israel trip was not a disappointment.

As the sport court began to fill up with students paying $2 each to attend, the seniors and staff warmed up on their respective baskets. The seniors had 5 players on their team, while the staff had 9. Mr. Buckley and I were the referees of the game.

The first half belonged to the seniors. Roaring out in front of the mostly senior-supporting crowd, the seniors took a big lead. The seniors extended their lead to over 20 points late in the first half and seemed to be running away with the game. Going into half time, the seniors looked as if they had the game well in hand.

And then, as it often does in sports, the game turned on its head.

The staff began to go to its leaders, Coach Flava, Mr. Weissman and Mr. Danovitch. The seniors could suddenly not buy a basket while the staff began seemingly making every shot that they took. This change in momentum led to a feverous comeback by the staff. The seniors’ lead went down under 15, then to 10, down to even 5! No matter what the seniors did, it seemed as if there was no way they could stop the bleeding.

Mr. Weissman hit two 3’s, coach Flav made five free throws, and although Adam Sharabi began to score for the seniors, it was not enough to stop the staff from taking the lead with 10 seconds to go.

With the game on the line, the seniors went to their leader and high-scorer in the game, Yossi Halpert. The crowd began counting down 10, 9, 8. Yossi crosses over at the top of the key. 7, 6, 5. He begins driving to his left. 4, 3. Yossi pulls up with 2 staff members in his face. 2. Yossi makes a double pump shot with 1 second on the clock to the win the game! Or had time expired? Mr. Buckley and I met at half court to discuss how we were going to call the play. We brought in Eitan Spitzer, who was in charge of the clock, to help us decipher the situation. What we decided was that Yossi had beat the official clock, but not the time that the students had been counting down. Because of this situation, it was decided that we would put 10 seconds back on the clock and give the seniors back the ball.

This time Yossi left no debate about whether he got the shot off in time or not.

Yossi took the inbounded ball, drove right and finished a floater over the outstretched hands of three staff defenders with 3 seconds left in the game. The staff called a timeout and had Coach Flava draw up a play. The execution was not there for the staff, and after having no answer to the prayer that was thrown up, the seniors had escaped with a win, 50-49.
