Shalhevet’s Girls Flag Football team walloped their rival YULA Panthers’ 30-2 led by Firehawk quarterback Maital Hiller’s five touchdowns and five interceptions.

The game, played at the Glendale Sports Complex on Sept. 16, was the Firehawks season opener, and the first game played after a two-year-long hiatus due to scheduling difficulties.

Coach Tommy Cannon, who is also the head coach of the Firehawk boys fag football team, said he was pleased with the team’s performance since they entered the game relatively unprepared.

“To my surprise, we executed quite well,” said Coach Tommy. “It was definitely nice to come in and seal a victory.”

Future games might be tougher, however. This season, the team has six more games scheduled, against YULA, Loma Linda, Redlands Academy, Glendale, Newbury Park, and Venice high schools.

“All those teams are good,” Coach Tommy said. “We’ve got a lot of work to do.”

Quarterback Maital Hiller said she was proud of the team’s victory and thanked her coach and teammates.

“Tommy is a great coach,” Maital said. “And he has taught us a lot.”

The new coach had only praise for his star player.

“She’s just an amazing athlete,” Coach Tommy said. “You give her the ball and ask her to give you five yards, and she gives you 50.”

“And she’s a leader. She gets everyone going and they follow suit.”
