Dylan and Dallas Corn were at Target buying carpet cleaner and gushers last Thursday, when they recognized Youtube star David Dobrik looking for pants for his friend.

After some conversation, Mr. Dobrik — known universally as “David” — and his friends began to discuss video ideas with Dylan and Dallas, brothers who are a senior and freshman, respectively, at Shalhevet.

“I guess he thought I was funny when we were talking, and he was like, ‘Okay you wanna make a video with us?’ and I was like, ‘Okay that would be cool,’” said Dylan.

Over the course of the afternoon Feb. 8, Mr. Dobrik’s crew went to the Corns’ house to film Dylan playing the piano, then took him for a haircut, then bought him a new suit and flowers to pick up a girl he liked in a car that Dylan chose and David provided.

The suit was a tux, the flowers were long-stemmed red roses and the car was a red Mustang convertible. They bantered back and forth and David joked that Dylan didn’t know how to drive, and the two of them laughed together in the car.

Eventually,  Mr. Dobrik posted his weekly “vlog”– video blog — about it, and Dylan became famous overnight.  Dallas said he was not featured in the video because he was too young; Dylan is 18.

By the end of the day, Dylan had 33,800 Instagram followers — and a new red Mustang convertible to keep.

“This is honestly unbelievable,” Dylan said in an interview with the Boiling Point on Sunday. “I feel like it’s just gonna be over in a second.”   

So far though, it’s still going strong.  This time last week, Dylan, who transferred to Shalhevet last year from Fairfax High School and is part of the Cooking and Culture Club, had posted six times on Instagram and had 500 followers.   As of Monday morning, he had 53,200 instagram followers.

Mr. Dobrik, on the other hand, is a Slovakia-born and Chicago-raised 22-year-old who rose to fame in 2013 on the six-second video-sharing app called Vine, which has since been closed down. He has more than 11 million subscribers on the video platform and seven million followers on Instagram.

Although the vlog Dylan is featured in is called “Surprising Random Person With A New Car!!”   it wasn’t entirely random. Both Dylan and Dallas have been fans of Dobrik’s for three years, and when they saw him at Target they asked to pose with him for a picture.

That led to the conversation, Dylan said, and an invitation to be in the week’s episode, which Dylan accepted.

But Mr. Dobrik has many kinds of vlogs so Dylan didn’t know getting a car would be part of it.  When planning the date, Mr. Dobrik asks Dylan (on camera) what kind of car would be cool for someone in his generation to drive.  

“A mustang,” Dylan replies.  

“What color?” David Dobrik asks.  

“Red,” replies Dylan.

Soon one appears. Dylan is told it has been rented for the day.

“I thought they were gonna be like, ‘Okay just kidding,’ and that was gonna be the end of the video,” Dylan said.

“And then he was like yeah, just drive it away.’ It took me until I got to my house to actually believe it was my car.”

“He was so relatable to the viewers of the vlog, and he instantly became an awesome dude to every member of the fandom.

Earlier, Mr. Dobrik and his “Vlog Squad” — his group of friends frequently featured in his vlogs —  took him to one of their houses for a haircut, then took him shopping for a new suit. The plan was for him to go for a drive with a girl had a crush on, in honor of Valentine’s Day.  

The girl was unnamed and blurred in the video but was a Shalhevet sophomore who has asked to remain anonymous.  She told the Boiling Point that Dylan texted her the day before that he had a surprise for her. Since they’re “pretty good friends” already, she thought they were going to go out to lunch.

He did not tell her what it was or that she would be filmed.

“I was not expecting that,” the girl told the Boiling Point in an interview. “I literally didn’t even put effort in like how I looked or anything — like I was just cleaning out my apartment ‘cause there was cat litter everywhere and I was just brooming it, and then I get a call like, ‘I’m outside.’

“I’m like, ‘I need to get ready,’” she continued. “So I just put on a flannel, the red flannel in the thumbs up you guys saw in the vlog. And then I just quickly grabbed my key, I went downstairs and that’s when it all happened.”

Outside, she saw some commotion, lots of girls standing and looking at something.  Then she saw someone holding a camera and wondered whether it might be Dylan’s friend, senior Yakir Kanefsky.

Dylan was there, too.

“He was already parked, and he was leaning by the car holding roses,” the girl said. “It was really sweet. It was really nice.”

She soon realized that the camera crew included David Dobrik, who she, too, had been following on Youtube. She said he filmed her but was nice about blurring her out and mostly not using her at all.  Only her hand, showing a thumbs-up sign, appears in the video.

The girl said she chose to be blurred out because she was surprised by the filming and did not know if she felt comfortable having her identity known.

“It’s really overwhelming, thinking you’re just going out to eat and then there’s this guy with a camera in my face,” the girl said. “It’s nothing bad or anything, but it was overwhelming, so I just thought like, I think I’d rather play it safe.”

Her voice is not in the video, but Dylan tells Mr. Dobrik that the girl said she can’t date until she’s ready to get married. She confirmed to the Boiling Point that she doesn’t want to date until she’s older and that she also wants to focus on school.

She said that the situation did not negatively impact her friendship with Dylan.

“I don’t think I let him down, because I think that we’re still good friends,” she said. “He was really understanding.”

Though Dylan was understanding of her decision not to date, some viewers were not.

“There were comments on the Youtube and on his Instagram saying, ‘She’s so stupid for friend-zoning you, how could she do that, blah blah blah,’ and ‘Now I bet she’s gonna want you since you’re famous,’” the girl said.

She said that initially the negative comments got to her, but now she has decided to ignore them.

“It’s like, okay you don’t even know me,” she said. “Don’t judge me until you know me.”

The video received 4.5 million views and 22,164 comments in its first day. Dylan said he’s gotten over 1,000 private messages on Instagram and requests from David Dobrik fans to start his own Youtube channel.

His instagram account, which had 500 followers on Friday, now has more than 50 thousand. On Monday morning, he posted a cartoon drawing of himself with the caption “First fan art! Made by @thegabbershow2 Also check out my first video! Link in bio!!!” The post has 10,331 likes.

Many David Dobrik fan accounts on Instagram have featured pictures of Dylan, and one fan, who wished to remain anonymous, has created a fan account for Dylan and Dallas, called @_cornbois.

He said he was attracted to Dylan’s seemingly real personality.

“Dylan seems like a typical introvert guy,”The founder of @_cornbois said in an interview on Instagram. “When he is with some good friends, he turns into this funny and awesome dude. The way he was presented to all the fandom was literally by living the dream of every fan of David. He was so relatable to the viewers of the vlog, and he instantly became an awesome dude to every member of the fandom.”

Another Dobrik fan, “Martha,” who runs an account called @d4vid.mp4 which is dedicated to posting video edits of pictures and videos of David and has over 2,000 followers, added “I love Dylan with all my heart” to her bio on Instagram.

“I like that Dylan had an awkward personality, and I feel like he’s really down to earth,” said Martha, who does not share her last name, in an interview.

Both Instagrammers said that they would watch Dylan’s Youtube videos if he made them.

“I would obviously watch them,” the @_cornbois owner said. “I actually direct messaged Dallas asking if they would start one. He told me they were looking forward to doing that, so I’m hyped.”

Dylan started his channel, called Corn Boi, yesterday, and posted his first video in which he and Dallas answer questions submitted by Instagram followers. The video had 6,700 views by Monday and more than a thousand subscribers.

Dylan said he’d also like to upload a video of the two of them eating corn and talking.  

David Dobrik posts vlogs three times a week, mostly following him and the Vlog Squad as they perform pranks on each other and as David buys his friends new cars and other gifts. He has developed a large following, selling merchandise with his name and performing on a nine-city tour this past summer.

Meanwhile, Dylan’s parents, Mrs. Silene and Mr. Gerry Corn, are proud of the message people are receiving from Dylan.

“People were saying, ‘Oh you inspire me, you’re just a regular guy, and something good happened,” Mrs. Corn said. “I think that’s the lesson Dylan’s giving. You have to be good, and believe that things will happen, and sometimes miracles happen. It promoted an emotion on people that was positive, all these sweet emotions. And I think that’s Dylan — he’s very sweet.”

Mr. Corn said that the video was different from some of David’s others that include more cursing and vulgarity.  

“Dylan’s more on the innocent side, so it’s more of a wholesome video,” Mr. Corn said.
