The Boys Football team won its home finale 27-8 over New Roads while improving its unblemished record to 11-0.
New Roads made the Firehawks grind out this victory, although the score makes it look like a blowout on paper. New Roads was blasted 40-0 in its first meeting with Shalhevet on Sept. 11.
While the offense struggled this time, with drives stalled inside the 20-yard line, the defense put on a show in the first half. Four Firehawks intercepted New Roads – Elon Glouberman, Seffi Arnan, Adam Kaufler and Hootie Kessler – and Seffi returned his pick for a touchdown from about midfield.
Edan Sokol ripped through the New Roads’ offensive line while swatting a pass in the pocket. The pass rush dominated, forcing four interceptions and four sacks: two by “sack master” Boaz Willis and another pair courtesy of Jeremy Glouberman.
On offense, Jacob Dauer posted three touchdowns — to Adam Kaufler, Max Helfand, and Micah Gill, who was playing in his first game back from an injury sustained in September. Tom Amzalag added to the offensive line’s strong showing, although it did allow a sack.
Despite the three-touchdown effort, the offense was not as prolific as usual. Jacob missed some more throws than usual, the running backs struggled at times, and the Firehawk offense faced more fourth down situations than in any other game this season.
Perhaps Micah was still recovering from injury when he got his flag pulled in the end zone while running across the field and not upfield, resulting in a safety. In addition, Shalhevet failed to score on a pair of red zone opportunities.
