We’re all sad to leave the sunshine for school, but the end of August does have a bright side: back-to-school shopping!
I’m here to tell you what’s hot, because with the dress code crackdown, nobody wants to be caught and forced to change. Luckily, this season’s styles fit in perfectly with school policy.
There are not one but two skirts everyone has an eye on. One’s called the “eyelash” skirt, and it’s got tiers upon tiers of short ruffles. It’s sweet and flirty, and while it might be a little dressy for school, it’s easily dressed down with a funky graphic (crew neck) tee.
The “Sex in the City” skirt (don’t worry, it has nothing to do with the new movie) is simple and classic. This year’s version of the high-waisted pocket skirt, it’s a black elastic waistband attached to any colored cotton skirt. Loose and simple, it’s the perfect thing to throw on on your way out the door, and it matches everything. It comes in all lengths, from mini to knee-length, so keep an eye out for a proper one. Since they’re elastic, you can go up a size for added length if need be.
For tops, think lots of layers! Wear your favorite comfy tee under an opened cardigan, a fun alternative to your zip-up sweatshirt. Or, try a summer tank top layered over a T-shirt to add color.
Find cardigans at Old Navy—they’re super soft and come in the prettiest colors, from pastels to brights and even basic neutrals. Summer tanks can be found anywhere, and go on sale as school starts. Try Target for basics, and Banana Republic for fun, more detailed tops.
As for accessories, you can always trust your favorite pair of Converse sneakers. Dress them up with ribbons or pretty laces. If yours, like mine, are falling apart and you need a new pair, you’re in luck. New, for back-to-school, are very glam sequined canvas sneakers, which look like an enthusiastic bedazzler got her hands on them. If that’s too cutesy for you, you might want to try Converse’s “Jack Purcell” sneakers. I love them because of the smile on the front.
The must-buy accessory of the season is a pair of black ballet flats. They match everything, and they’re sweet and simple. Gladiator sandals are still very hot. And don’t forget black leggings for those chilly days!
As for boys, we’re seeing skinny ties and skinny jeans. And I know, it’s really difficult to wear skinny jeans without sagging. Sure, Lil Wayne and all your friends do it, but girls don’t think it’s cute. When I know what print boxers you’re wearing just by sitting behind you in class, we’ve got a problem.
Since the school’s enforcing it anyway, this is your perfect opportunity to go shopping for a pair of pants that fit properly. Straight-leg jeans (in black of course) are a perfect alternative—similar look, just not as tight, so they’ll fit like regular pants at the waist. You’re wearing a belt anyway, you might as well use it!
On top, layer a T-shirt under your button-down collared shirt, and a zip-up sweatshirt on cold days. Or, if you’re feeling preppy, try a cardigan.
It’s a lot harder to pout about school starting, when it means shopping for cute clothes. So grab a friend as a second opinion and go! If you hurry, you’ll catch the back-to-school sales, and you’ll be in dress code, and in style, in time for school!
