Adam Westerman: Surfer in Progress

I learned how to surf probably around June 2020. Starting was pretty easy, ‘cause I was already off of school, so whenever I could go to the beach I would just seize my opportunity.

The hardest part is probably getting up on the board. The first time, I couldn’t stand up. Throughout your progress you kind of switch boards — you go from a longer one to a smaller one. So I started off on an 8-foot board. At this point it’s kind of easy for me to get up. I’m now down to like a six-foot.

My next goal is to get to a fiberglass 6-foot board. The fiberglass boards are easier to maneuver on, but the board is much lighter and it’s harder to pop up. A good pop-up helps you ride the wave easier.

It’s hard to get good at — like, I still wouldn’t consider myself ‘good.’ But I think my progress has been pretty good. It’s just been really fun, and I really enjoy it.
