OPINION: We’re more safe, but we’re not more prepared

BOOM! A major earthquake has just shaken Los Angeles during school hours. Quick, what does the school want us to do? Where are the earthquake supplies?

EDITORIAL: Favoritism: a multi-sided call for action

There are no facts. There is no evidence. But there are feelings, and feelings are important enough to confront the topic of favoritism.
POLITICS: From left, Republican candidates Rand Paul, Mike Huckabee, Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz were among 11 candidates duking it out durring the GOP debate Sept. 16.

Two rows away from Rubio at the GOP debate

Upon seeing me on television during the CNN Republican primary debate Sept. 16, my family and friends bombarded me with questions about whether the stage was really that hot, as all of the candidates seemed to be sweating. While I affirmed their assumptions as to the extreme heat, the room temperature was not the most important part of my experience.

Thanks for opening the doors, we won’t let you down

My son was part of the Ikar Tuesday Hebrew classes at Ikar in 5775. (He was Bar Mizvah 2 Adar 5775). When we arrived for the new year and saw how the JCC was packed as never before--with the JCC itself, all the people who use the JCC on a regular and irregular basis, Ikar's Hebrew classes, and, now Shalhevet--we were quite surprised.
MEMORY LANE: Outside view of the old Shalhevet building. The school moved there the year the Boiling Point was founded.

In all that’s new, a strong echo of 1999

My classmates and teachers consistently talk about how Shalhevet so drastically changed over the years. In many ways, they’re right. Naturally teachers come and go, rules change, curriculums mature, and buildings are remodeled. But scrape off all the added detail and what remains is a core impressively untainted by time.

Sharing the building, but not the decision

When news came that Ikar would be using our new building forTuesday afternoon Hebrew school and religious services, it was only natural to cringe. Ikar is associated with our dreadful days spent at the cramped, hot, and locker-less JCC.

You’re parked on Barrows Drive and it’s two minutes before class. You make some mental calculations: it would take four minutes to run up to Fairfax and cross at the light, or it would take one minute to simply dash across the street while traffic is stopped. It’s clear which one is faster, but it’s also clear which one is right.
Cancelling class to build a utopia

Cancelling class to build a utopia

At face value, it seems to make little to no sense that the school would cancel 10 periods of class time for hour-long discussions on what the Just Community is supposed to look like. Is this really worth the time we are investing?

OPINION: Hail and farewell to two more of Shalhevet’s greatest

June 21, 2015
Shalhevet has a Hall of Fame. No, not some building or display case that houses memorabilia of legendary athletes. It’s more like a list of the most illustrious administrators and faculty members the school has ever had. People who didn’t positively affect just the school, but also the students. Perhaps they even saved Shalhevet from a financial crisis or two.
