11th Grade Blog: Rose from the heart

September 11th was very different for me this year. Perhaps it was because I was able to rejoice that the main figurehead of Al Qaeda, Osama bin Laden, was being emasculated in eternal hell. Or maybe it was because this year I was mature enough to finally realize the full magnitude of destruction that 9/11 had wrought on America. Either way, a new surge of patriotism found its way to me. For the first time, the idea of joining the American army popped up in my mind. The idea of working for the FBI to combat terrorism strengthened itself majorly. This year, the emotional connection I had to 9/11 was unlike any I’d felt before.

I dedicated the better part of my weekend to 9/11 remembrance. When I got home from school on Friday, I watched numerous videos about 9/11 on Youtube. I can safely say that I will never forget the voice of Melissa Doi begging for help from an operator while stuck on the 83rd floor of the World Trade Center. I watched the final scene from the movie United 93 and am convinced it is the most powerful movie scene I’ve ever seen. I spent several hours creating a tribute video with the intention of posting it on Youtube myself. And today, I lit a candle in honor of the victims, wondering how such evil can manifest itself in the form of human beings.

I finally came to the conclusion that nothing can really be said of 9/11. Nothing can explain the tragedy or the mass loss of lives. All that can be said is that as Americans, we have the responsibility to continue honoring the lives of the 2,992 people who lost their lives that day, so many of them heroes. And I think we bear that responsibility because it helps remind of us of how strong of a nation we are and how we have to stay unified. And lot of times we forget that. But we must never forget 9/11. God bless America.
