It was a full-team effort when the Firehawks won the boys championship at this year’s Steve Glouberman Basketball Tournament. Guided by Coach Ryan Coleman, tournament co-MVPs Zack Muller and Asher Dauer led the way with 62 and 57 points respectively, supported by Noah Rossi, who won an All-Tournament award, and Jacob Benezra, Jeremy Ashegian, Ze’ev Remer and everyone else on the varsity team.

“I’m proud of every single one of them,” said Zack, who was also named All-Team, “especially Ze’evy, especially Noah, Jeremy — we all played our heart out, and our coach, Coach Ryan. We’re all a brotherhood.”

The result was Shalhevet’s first-ever boys championship at the tournament it hosts and sponsors.

“Offensively we made a conscious effort to crash the offensive glass, and I think we did that really well,” said Coach Coleman after the championship game.

The girls team fell short of its goal this year (they won in 2015), but led by Maital Hiller — who at 59 points overall was Shalhevet’s top scorer — along with Kiku Shaw, who earned an Honorable Mention and won the Firehawk girls’ All-Tournament Award, Talia Abel and Talia Tizabi, they fought hard and placed third.

Supporting both teams was the Firehawk crowd, which had decorated the gym with posters playing with players’ names (“Zack Attack” for Zack,  “Killer Hiller” for Maital and “Fish Gills” for Talia Gill) and nearly climbed the rafters when Jacob Benezra dunked the ball in Game 4.
