Girls’ comeback not enough against YULA basketball

The second match-up of the Shalhevet vs. Yula double-header on Feb. 13 pitted the girls’ teams from rival schools against each other later that evening. The baskets had been lowered, as most of the crowd from the previous boys’ game had filed out of the LACES gym.

With a late-game surge, the Firehawks made an interesting game out of their eventual loss, 50-37, to the YULA Panthers. Their efforts were bolstered by a smaller audience.

After the thrills of the first game, a noticeable number of both Shalhevet and YULA fans could be seen exiting the arena. A much higher percentage of Shalhevet freshmen remained to cheer on the lady Firehawks.

Around 300 fans viewed the guys’ teams lock horns, while approximately 70 Firehawk fans witnessed the girls play, along with only 50 or-so Panther fans.

“We are down by 10?” asked freshman Rose Bern during the game, who then glanced at the scoreboard. “Uch! now it’s 12!”

Throughout the first half of the game, similar things were mumbled throughout the crowd. Spirit, expressed in both spontaneous and organized cheering, was present during the boy’s match, however, it was lacked during this competition.

Going into halftime, Shalhevet was staring at a 18 point deficit: 28-10.

But with nothing to lose and a renewed spirit, the Firehawks stormed out of the locker room to begin the third quarter, using two points from junior Gaby Newman and a three-pointer from her senior sister Daniella Newman to spark a 7-0 run.

The Firehawks ended the quarter by slashing the Panther lead to 35-22.

Even with time running short, Shalhevet did not give up, catching up to within 9 points of YULA after falling further behind in the final period.

Firehawk fans began to finally get into the game, rallying behind their team to encourage the comeback.

“I think it was the motivation and spirit,” said freshman Erin Sharfman, referring to why she thought the Firehawks found the will to stay strong.

Despite this loss, the Firehawks reached the playoffs in their league. But because they had already committed to a tournament in Maimi, Florida, the girls opted to skip the games in SoCal and across the country to participate in the tournament.
