Building a Winter Day Outfit

When you wake up in the morning to a gloomy day and realize you have 10 minutes before you have to run out the door, follow this guide for a perfect winter look.

Winter is a time to layer on comfy sweaters, leggings and thermals to stay warm. But living in L.A means being privileged to have great weather at this time of year, which makes dressing for the seasons doesn’t follow what’s being shown in commercials or worn by the characters on TV. No mittens or puffy jackets allowed.

Instead, the trick for dressing for a winter in L.A is layering light-weight materials that won’t suffocate or cause you to overheat. Some good ones are cotton, silk and linen. Layering with cashmere or wool is bound to grow bothersome as the day heats up.

This winter bright colors are very in, the palette including crimson, neon orange, purple and sky blue. Layering a bunch of contrasting bright hues can be very disconcerting as clashing is a major no-no, but luckily color blocking has come back into style. And when a few of these colors are pieced together through accessories or big statement pieces, it makes an outfit totally chic and exciting and can brighten any gloomy, winter day.

Another way to layer is by using many different fabrics ad textures all in one outfit. Silk and fur or knitwear and sequins may seem like daring combinations, but they add definition when putting together a cozy outfit.

If you want to stay on the safe side of layering, choose a statement piece with a fun design and build the outfit up with neutral colors so your pattern pops. This season especially, micro patterns are totally on trend, so break out those polka-dots and stripes.

After you’ve put on our outfit, it’s time for shoes and accessories. To stay casual for school try a low wedge, oxfords, tall boots or a pointy flat in any pattern or material. Scarves and leggings are also very important of course, but try a pair of sparkly tights or sheer tights for a new twist.
Metallic jewelry is eye-catching and easy to match, so layer on a bracelet or two.

Styling the tresses should be left for last.  Luckily, this winter’s hair trends are simple, easy and all about the no-fuss do’s. These include buns and half up, half down styles. Natalie Portman, Emma Stone, Octavia Spencer and Zoe Saldana all wore buns very recently at the SAG Awards.

And if it happens to be one of those rare chilly days in L.A winter, go ahead and throw on a comfy fur or leather jacket (faux of course) to complete your comfy layered look.
Good Luck!
